While I love writing, I’m also a big fan of infographics.
And an infographic about writing? Well, that’s right up my street.
I recently came across The Ultimate Grammar Cheat Sheet for Writers. Originally created by The Expert Editor, this infographic contains a great list of grammar watch outs for perfecting your storytelling, as well as some handy proofreading tips.
The English language is full of quirks, oddities and inconsistencies:
There are words that sound the same but are spelt differently and mean different things -
“John had to write to the right people to keep his rights during his rites”
And there are words that sound the same and are even spelt the same, but still mean different things -
“Startled, the dove dove into the bushes”
Then there's the vexed question of commas, where to use them and where not to. With no exact science behind it, what represents ‘correct’ is up for debate. Though usually, it’s a case of less is more.
With all these peculiarities, it’s no wonder that even native English speakers can struggle to navigate the wilderness of correct grammar. Here in the Equinet Content team, we’re often finding ourselves in these kinds of discussions. Should punctuation marks at the end of a quote sit inside or outside of the quotation marks? Where do you place the possessive apostrophe at the end of a word beginning with s?
As writers in the Inbound Marketing world, we are always looking for ways to improve the content we create for our clients. A reminder of some of the 'do’s 'and 'dont’s' of the English language will at least help us keep the beady-eyed grammar police firmly at bay.
Are you looking for ways to improve the quality of your business website or blog? Want to make sure your grammar is up to scratch and not turning visitors away?
